Energy efficiency watchers are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see the HP POD, an add-on datacenter with room in its 40-foot container for up to 3,520 Intel Xeon nodes. The Hyperion project, a partnership between Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), a world-class research and development facility, Intel and nine other leading technology companies was highlighted this week at Super Computing (SC)'08 in Austin. Hyperion will consist of a world class Linux cluster to support partner development and large-scale testing. The final Hyperion deployment, which will be Intel Cluster Ready, will provide high performance computing (HPC) assets of more than 1,000 nodes. Intel, LLNL and Dell will collaborate on the installation and deployment. The cluster currently uses the 45-nanometer Intel Xeon processor 5400 series to reach its PetaFLOP computing and storage capabilities. Intel's next generation microprocessors will figure prominently in the next phase of the project. More details can be found at the Dell Press Room.

Intel's advances in the high performance computing field are being showcased this week at Super Computing '08 in Austin, TX. Among the highlights is the work Intel is doing with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NACR) which uses some of the world's most powerful supercomputers to predict weather and climate change. Its latest 3D atmospheric model, the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF), is being used by the National Weather Service, U.S. military and private meteorological services to improve forecasting accuracy and speed. Early tests using Intel's next generation microarchitecture show that NACR has nearly tripled the speed of WRF modeling compared to previous Intel based solutions. The lightning quick modeling will speed the pace of discovery and benefit the general public by providing forecasts that help protect life and property.
