01.28.2014 - AMD announces plans to sample 64-bit ARM Opteron A “Seattle” processors

View AMD related news.

AMD's rich history in server-class silicon includes a number of notable firsts including the first 64-bit x86 architecture and true multi-core x86 processors. AMD adds to that history by announcing that its revolutionary AMD Opteron™ A-series 64-bit ARM processors, codenamed “Seattle,” will be sampling this quarter.

AMD Opteron A-Series processors combine AMD's expertise in delivering server-class silicon with ARM's trademark low-power architecture and contributing to the Open Source software ecosystem that is rapidly growing around the ARM 64-bit architecture. AMD Opteron A-Series processors make use of ARM's 64-bit ARMv8 architecture to provide true server-class features in a power efficient solution.

AMD plans for the AMD Opteron™ A1100 processors to be available in the second half of 2014 with four or eight ARM Cortex A57 cores, up to 4MB of shared Level 2 cache and 8MB of shared Level 3 cache. The AMD Opteron A-Series processor supports up to 128GB of DDR3 or DDR4 ECC memory as unbuffered DIMMs, registered DIMMs or SODIMMs.

The ARMv8 architecture is the first from ARM to have 64-bit support, something that AMD brought to the x86 market in 2003 with the AMD Opteron processor. Not only can the ARMv8-based Cortex A-57 architecture address large pools of memory, it has been designed from the ground up to provide the optimal balance of performance and power efficiency to address the broad spectrum of scale-out data center workloads.

With more than a decade of experience in designing server-class solutions silicon, AMD took the ARM Cortex A57 core, added a server-class memory controller, and included features resulting in a processor that meets the demands of scale-out workloads. A requirement of scale-out workloads is high performance connectivity, and the AMD Opteron A1100 processor has extensive integrated I/O, including eight PCI Express Gen 3 lanes, two 10 GB/s Ethernet and eight SATA 3 ports.

Scale-out workloads are becoming critical building blocks in today's data centers. These workloads scale over hundreds or thousands of servers, making power efficient performance critical in keeping total cost of ownership (TCO) low. The AMD Opteron A-Series meets the demand of these workloads through intelligent silicon design and by supporting a number of operating system and software projects.

As part of delivering a server-class solution, AMD has invested in the software ecosystem that will support AMD Opteron A-Series processors. AMD is a gold member of the Linux Foundation, the organisation that oversees the development of the Linux kernel, and is a member of Linaro, a significant contributor to the Linux kernel. Alongside collaboration with the Linux Foundation and Linaro, AMD itself is listed as a top 20 contributor to the Linux kernel. A number of operating system vendors have stated they will support the 64-bit ARM ecosystem, including Canonical, Red Hat and SUSE, while virtualization will be enabled through KVM and Xen.

Operating system support is supplemented with programming language support, with Oracle and the community-driven OpenJDK porting versions of Java onto the 64-bit ARM architecture. Other popular languages that will run on AMD Opteron A-Series processors include Perl, PHP, Python and Ruby. The extremely popular GNU C compiler and the critical GNU C Library have already been ported to the 64-bit ARM architecture.

Through the combination of kernel support and development tools such as libraries, compilers and debuggers, the foundation has been set for developers to port applications to a rapidly growing ecosystem.

As AMD Opteron A-Series processors are well suited to web hosting and big data workloads, AMD is a gold sponsor of the Apache Foundation, the organisation that manages the Hadoop and HTTP Server projects. Up and down the software stack, the ecosystem is ready for the data center revolution that will take place when AMD Opteron A-Series are deployed.

Soon, AMD's partners will start to realise what a true server-class 64-bit ARM processor can do. By using AMD's Opteron A-Series Development Kit, developers can contribute to the fast growing software ecosystem that already includes operating systems, compilers, hypervisors and applications. Combining AMD's rich history in designing server-class solutions with ARM's legendary low-power architecture, the Opteron A-Series ushers in the era of personalised performance.

01.27.2014 - Bing.com and FOX News Channel team up to bring real-time polling to the State of the Union

View Microsoft-Press related news.

REDMOND , Wash. Jan . 2 7 , 2014 Bing.com and FOX News Channel (FNC) are teaming up again on the Bing Pulse online voting tool for the State of the Union address and Republican response on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 9 p.m. EST. The first-of-its-kind technology, which was introduced during the 2013 State of the Union, enables viewers to track and share their opinions and reactions in real time via their smartphone, PC or tablet. For the 2013 State of the Union, the Bing Pulse received 12.9 million votes during the address. Live results were also shown on FNC.

During the address and the response, people will be able to not only provide their feedback, but also look at the Bing Pulse online or on FNC to see what other viewers think of both the speech and the Republican response in real time as the remarks are being delivered. The Bing Pulse also provides an intensity score, which highlights the key moments of the address or when the greatest numbers of viewers vote at the same time. New this year is an online annotated graphing feature that enables people with one click to understand exactly what was said during those polling spikes. Also new this year are poll questions about some of the key topics in the speeches.

“We deployed the Bing Pulse for the 2013 State of the Union because we thought it was the perfect tool to give people an opportunity to react in real time to the address,” said Mark Penn, executive vice president of Advertising and Strategy at Microsoft. “Over the course of 59 minutes, we conducted the largest live online poll in history with 12.9 million votes registered. That response showed how much people want to make their voices heard during significant political moments. This year, we’re adding more features and are covering the Republican response as well.”

In addition to teaming up with FNC for its State of the Union coverage, the Bing Pulse runs three nights a week on “Special Report with Bret Baier” (6 p.m. EST). According to Nielsen, “Special Report” delivers on average 2.2 million viewers a night with Bing Pulse drawing over half a million votes per week.

How i t w orks

The Bing Pulse allows people to share their opinion of the State of the Union by “voting” every five seconds on their reactions to the content of the speech. Viewers simply go to Bing.com/politics from a computer, tablet or mobile device to connect with the poll while watching the president’s address or Republican response on television or through a live feed on the Bing.com/politics hub.

Unlike typical polls, Bing Pulse allows people to self-identify by gender and political party affiliation to provide additional aggregate data analysis to the results shown online and on FNC.

As the speeches progress, viewers have five choices to characterize how they are feeling about what they are hearing: strongly agree, somewhat agree, neutral, somewhat disagree and strongly disagree. The live count of the number of “pulses,” or votes, becomes a line graph of how users react to the State of the Union, as well as the Republican response throughout both speeches, and will be visible on the television screen on FNC. Viewers watching the speech on other networks can have a robust State of the Union companion experience by participating in the Bing Pulse and seeing the live poll results online. During the course of the speeches, the Bing Pulse online poll results will be updated every few seconds on FNC with data also available at Bing.com/politics. More in-depth news and analysis will be available at http://www.foxnews.com/sotu.

Comprehensive, n onpartisan State of the Union e xperience

The Bing Pulse is part of a comprehensive, nonpartisan State of the Union experience on Bing.com/politics and on FNC. In addition to the Bing Pulse, the site provides a single destination for up-to-the-minute political news, expert information and real-time conversations on major policy issues. Bing.com/politics features include these:

  • A live feed of President Obama’s State of the Union address and the Republican response

  • An annotated graph allowing users to see what parts of the State of the Union are soaring and what parts are tanking

  • Real-time news results using the Bing news filter that helps people navigate the news by filtering coverage from left-leaning and right-leaning sources

  • A live feed of social conversations on Twitter so people can stay informed on what leading political pundits are saying about the speech

01.24.2014 - Microsoft releases global survey revealing widespread belief in developing and developed nations that personal technology is transforming lives for the better

View Microsoft-Press related news.

DAVOS, Switzerland — Jan. 24, 2014 — A new global survey of Internet users conducted by Microsoft Corp. reveals distinct regional findings and differing viewpoints between the developed and developing world. However, overwhelmingly the more than 10,000 people surveyed from 10 nations said they embrace personal technology, particularly in emerging markets, and see it as the foundation of innovation and economic empowerment.

Microsoft unveiled the results of its new survey today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in the report titled, “Views from Around the Globe: How Personal Technology is Changing Our Lives.”

Mark Penn, Microsoft Executive Vice President of Advertising and Strategy, presented the poll’s findings followed by a panel discussion moderated by award-winning journalist and author Maria Bartiromo. The panel included Marc R. Benioff, chairman and CEO, Salesforce.com; Maurice Lévy, chairman and CEO, Publicis Group; Bill McDermott, co-CEO, SAP; Alan Murray, president, Pew Research Center; and former U.S. Treasury Secretary and current Charles W. Elliot university professor, Harvard University, Lawrence H. Summers.

“Whether you live in a world capital or a remote village, personal technology is seen as empowering and as a vehicle to individual economic growth,” Penn said. “Despite varying rates of personal technology adoption and cultural differences, there is an overwhelming sense globally that improvements are being experienced across the board.”

Among the key findings of the study are these:

• A majority of the people surveyed around the world believe that personal technology has the most positive impact on innovation in business and empowering people to start a new business.

• People surveyed in developing countries — especially Brazil, Russia, India and China — believe that personal technology is creating job opportunities and helping bridge economic gaps.

• People in China say that personal technology has positively impacted personal freedom more than people in any other country surveyed.

• Those in developing countries — especially India — say that personal technology is improving education, health and healthcare.

• In Brazil, people say that personal technology had a strong impact on arts and culture.

• In China and India, they say their quality of life has improved due to personal technology.

Although personal technology was seen overwhelmingly as a positive force in both developed and developing countries, there were concerns that focused on personal safety and security, family bonds, and, most significantly, privacy. Interestingly, the survey found that the developing countries are more willing to trade privacy for security. Despite privacy concerns, however, nearly three-quarters of parents around the world want their children to have more, not less, access to personal technology. This is particularly true in developing countries, where parents are especially supportive of increased access to technology. Opinions are mixed in developed countries, where more parents feel there should be limits to technology access.

About the poll

The Microsoft poll was conducted between Dec. 26, 2013, and Jan. 3, 2014, and surveyed 10,009 Internet users in the United States, France, Brazil, Russia, China, India, Japan, Germany, Mexico and Turkey. The results were then weighted based on the size of the Internet populations in each of the 10 countries. The full survey findings and comprehensive analysis of the poll can be found at http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_blog/archive/2014/01/23/personal-technology-is-changing-lives-around-the-world-what-we-learned-from-talking-to-10-000-people-in-10-countries.aspx.

01.23.2014 - “Kustom Kaveri”: Pushing the Limits with Small Form Factors

View AMD related news.
For CES 2014, I built three custom systems, featuring the new AMD A10 APUs that you might also know as “Kaveri”. All of these systems were built in a real home - lots of Dremel disks, files ‘n sandpaper, Krylon paint, utility knife work…. all the fun tools that come in handy for custom PC building.

The systems were built with mini-ITX motherboards to highlight the small form factor possibilities of the next generation AMD APUs. All three mods feature the new AMD A10 APU, AMD Radeon™ Gamer Memory, and one of them is equipped with the AMD Radeon™ R9 270X GPU -  what can I say? We like to keep it all in the AMD “family”.

PASSIVELY COOLED HTPC SYSTEMThe first one is a “small size” home theater PC system, designed to fit beside typical entertainment equipment. It’s passively cooled (absolutely no fans) and deadly silent - no beeps, clicks or whirs! It was a pretty simple build that you can bolt together and go, but I did bend a few heatpipes along the way. I like looking at the inside and wondering “Where did the massive cooler go?”

 FC8_layers_cropped_scaled_5.gif

BATTLEPACK LAN PARTY CASE MODThis PC is built into a Pelican 1470 suitcase - a complete custom build. The case started out indestructible and waterproof, but some time with a drill and router fixed that. A Krylon Fusion black undercoat and gold final coat completed the Battlepack look. The AMD A10-7850K has enough grunt for great gameplay, even on a tough game like Battlefield 4. Fun fact: the one-fan water cooling and bottom vents ensure this rig can run quietly with the lid open or closed.

“RED ‘n RADEON” MINI-ITX GAMING SYSTEMLast but not least, the final build is a more typical small case power gamer system, created for excellent gaming and designed to run cool for a long time. The AMD A10-7850K APU is driving an AMD Radeon™ R9 270X graphics card for high frame rates. Custom mods include red paint accents on the Sugo case, and modifying the interior to fit the APU water cooler. The R9 270X has 7 LEDs added inside the fan shroud to light up the red stripes - an easy mod if you can solder.

 IMG_0842.JPG.jpg

And there you have it - I hope you’re inspired to stretch your imagination when it comes to your next custom build.  I wanted to demonstrate to all of you that AMD technology can bring a truly incredible PC building experience within the comforts of your own home. That’s enough from me… now go build something!

01.22.2014 - AMD Opteron processors codenamed “Warsaw” provide upgrade path for AMD Open 3.0 Open Compute servers

View AMD related news.
Opteron_6300.jpgAMD has been giving customers what they want since 2003 with our AMD Opteron™ Series processors, one of the industry’s most powerful, energy-efficient and cost-effective processors. Today, AMD continues to give enterprise users what they want with two new AMD Opteron™ 6300 processors, codenamed “Warsaw” that are optimized for the AMD Open 3.0 Open Compute platform.

The AMD Opteron™ 6338P and 6370P are designed to meet demanding performance per-watt, per-dollar requirements that are at the heart of server buying decisions. Both processors are being released today with 12 and 16 x86 cores, respectively, and are based on the proven "Piledriver" architecture and supporting quad-channel DDR3 memory.

For customers deploying hundreds or thousands of servers, the little details add up, and AMD designed the AMD Opteron 6338P and 6370P in response to customer feedback. Customers wanted a high-performance, power-efficient and cost-effective enterprise-grade processor that meets the growing requirements of virtualized workloads, such as complex data analysis and xSQL database servers- exactly what AMD Opteron 6338P and 6370P are best at.

The AMD Opteron 6338P is a 12-core processor with a base frequency of 2.3 GHz, which can run at up to 2.8 GHz using AMD Turbo CORE technology. The AMD Opteron 6370P is a 16-core processor with a base frequency of 2.0 GHz that can be boosted to 2.5 GHz with AMD Turbo CORE technology. Both processors have a power band of 99 watts.

For many enterprises, “rip-and-replace” is not a viable option, so our goal is to extend the useful life of existing infrastructures. That’s why the AMD Opteron 6338P and 6370P processors maintain socket and software compatibility with existing AMD Opteron 6300 processors. This enables enterprises to drop the new Opteron processors into servers that already run G34 socket AMD Opteron 6300 processors, including the AMD Open 3.0 Open Compute platform.

Facebook started the Open Compute Project to bring “open source” hardware to the fore, similar to open source software. The goal is to provide a forum where companies can contribute efficient and economical data center infrastructure ideas and designs. AMD's long-term contribution to the Open Compute Project manifests itself in the AMD Open 3.0 platform that offers significant total cost of ownership (TCO) savings for some workloads. The TCO of a server encompasses the hardware, power to run as well as cool the systems, and support and management.

The Open Compute Project offers enterprises the opportunity to pick pieces of equipment from multiple vendors and have them work together as they are designed to a single specification. It also helps unburden enterprises from management tools that only work with a single vendor's hardware. AMD's Open 3.0 platform provides best of breed hardware, combining more than a decade of experience in producing 64-bit x86 processors with a platform that meets open industry standards. All of this translates into a win for the customer with increased choice, amazing manageability and outstanding TCO.

AMD Opteron 6338P and 6370P processors are available from Penguin and Avnet and have been qualified for use in Sugon and Supermicro servers.
